Modern living depletes our ability to attain wellness.
Free radicals are not only produced from within our bodies, but are also ingested through living in a modern world. Our lives constantly expose us to these poisons on a regular basis through water and air pollution, polluted foods, x-rays, excessive sun exposure, too much stress and a variety of other sources. Even if we limit our exposure, it is impossible to completely eliminate taking in these harmful free radicals.
Combine our modern living with oxidative stress and you can see why a number of diseases and health issues are on the rise. It is important that we do not live in fear but rather take this information and make the best choices we can to live our best lives. There are many preventative measures we can take to help us live longer, healthier and happier lives.
- Reduce your exposure to free radicals—it is impossible to irradiate all free radicals from our environment but we can certainly take some preventative measures. There are so many ways to make greener choices for ourselves and our world. There are a whole host of new ideas like cleaner burning energy to non-toxic products and materials being offered today. We can incorporate many of these new products into our daily lives. The important thing to do is to thoroughly research and make sure these products live up to their claims.
- Create a prevent vs. cure mindset—too many people wait to see their doctor until they are sick. If we can change our mindsets to preventing versus curing we could dramatically reduce illness. Changing this mindset simply means making small changes to prevent disease and illness, like exercise, superfoods, and incorporating supplements.
- Seek natural healing first—there are many approaches to health and healing today. Many which have been around for centuries like using herbs to heal. If you haven’t done so already, open your mind to naturopathic options and eastern medicine. Both can prove very powerful in reducing imbalances in our bodies and preventing disease before it starts.
- Look at wellness as a working wheel— when all the cogs of the wheel are working in harmony, your body is healthy and well. Set a strategy with small attainable monthly goals for the changes you will make in your life to achieve wellness.
- Take time for yourself—this perhaps is one of the more difficult ones to achieve (especially for women) considering our modern lifestyles and busy lives. Reducing stress and getting enough rest are critical. Think of it as an investment in you so that you are able to in turn give more to others.
- Use yoga to challenge, restore & grow—so many modern yogis use yoga only for the challenge of reaching new poses and movement. Yoga offers so much more. It is a holistic focus which can truly create the tranquility to live in peace, good health and harmony with the greater whole.
